In an attempt to promote open source on a continuing basis, Linux for You magazine recently formed the FOSII (pronounced foss-eye), a forum of like-minded individuals, predominantly from India, who are deeply interested in driving innovation in and adoption of OSS in India. The forum works quite like a "mailing list", where its members discuss issues and decide on future actions, in line with the goals of the forum.

FOSII members belong to various facets of the Linux/OSS (Open Source Software) eco-system, including the industry, academia, government, and the community. FOSII not only brings such diverse personalities together, but also facilitates members to pursue different agendas under the OSS umbrella in line with their specialisation, through the creation of sub-groups. These sub-groups then take up different causes amongst themselves and drive initiatives.

The key benefits that FOSII offers its members include:

+  A neutral platform to pursue a common agenda by combining and
    sharing resources
+  A common platform to interact with like-minded individuals and organisations
+  A platform where conflicting stances can be resolved through
   open-minded discussion

The EFY Group (publishers of LINUX for You and Electronics for You magazines) has provided the initial infrastructural support for FOSII including the team members for its secretariat. LinuxAsia is one of the biggest Linux/OSS events in Asia, and is being held for the fourth time at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi, from 31st January 2007 to 2nd February 2007. The overall direction of LinuxAsia 2007 will be managed by FOSII and its members. Also, a long-term agenda for FOSII is expected to emerge from their annual summit at LinuxAsia 2007.
